Commission launches call for evidence on Digital Action Plan for the Water Sector

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to support the development of the EU Action Plan for the Digitalisation of the Water Sector, a flagship initiative under the European Water Resilience Strategy. Open until 24 June 2026, the consultation seeks stakeholder input on how digital technologies can improve water efficiency, strengthen infrastructure resilience, reduce losses, and enhance Europe’s competitiveness.

Water Europe welcomes this important step towards accelerating the digital transformation of the water sector. Digital technologies, including smart metering, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and IoT solutions are essential enablers for achieving a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable water system. However, unlocking their full potential requires a coherent European framework that supports deployment at scale.

In its recently published position paper on the Digitalisation Action Plan, Water Europe calls for the creation of a Digital Single Market for Water Data and Water Operations. Such a framework would enable interoperable, secure, and scalable digital solutions across Europe while fostering innovation, investment, and cross-border collaboration.

The position paper highlights the need for large-scale deployment of digital technologies, harmonised data governance, stronger investment incentives, robust cybersecurity provisions, and the integration of digital tools into EU water legislation. It also emphasises the strategic role of initiatives such as the Copernicus Water Thematic Hub in building a trusted European water data ecosystem.

Water Europe encourages all stakeholders across the water value chain to contribute to the consultation and help shape an ambitious Digitalisation Action Plan that strengthens Europe’s water resilience and competitiveness. More info available here.
