EU launch a new competition to tackle marine plastic pollution

Share

Every year, 26 million tons plastic wastes end up in oceans, polluting the world’s ocean surface with plastic pieces. Plastic pollution has disastrous consequences for global environment, health and wildlife.

To tackle the global plastic pollution crisis, the European Union has launched a new competition for Marine Ecosystems Protection, aiming at developing space solutions to track and remove marine plastic pollution.

As part of the CASSINI initiative, the prize will be awarded to one or several best data-driven marine or maritime digital application(s) meeting the criteria of the contest and is expected to leverage more private investment capital to the winning contestant. Find out more here and submit your application by 03 May 2022.

In the context of the proposal for a Regulation for Microplastics pollution – measures to reduce its impact on the environment, Water Europe responded to the public consultation and has published a policy-oriented paper that you can find here
