The European Commission has published its latest Implementation Reports assessing the state of water in the European Union. Released on 4 February, these reports call on Member States to take stronger measures to improve water management by 2027.

The reports evaluate the Water Framework Directive, Floods Directive, and Marine Strategy Framework Directive, highlighting both progress and challenges in protecting Europe’s water resources. Despite some improvements over the past six years, the findings indicate that greater efforts are needed to enhance freshwater quality, manage flood risks, and safeguard marine ecosystems.

With concrete insights on how to achieve EU targets for water quality and quantity, the reports will also contribute to shaping the upcoming Water Resilience Strategy.
