On the 4th of February, from 10h00 to 11h15 CET, Water Europe will host a webinar titled “Space and Digitalisation of the Water Sector”, organised in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) under the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding. The event, open to a broad audience, is part of the WOLLs webinar series, an initiative launched last year, aimed to strengthen collaboration, data-sharing, lessons learned, and to reinforce the network among the water-oriented living labs.
The webinar will explore how digital solutions and earth observation technologies can support the development of the water-oriented living labs and enhance evidence-based decision-making in the water sector to ac=hive a Water-Smart Society and Economy. The sessions will focus on digital decision-support systems, digital twins, and the use of space-based data for water management. This online event also represents the opportunity to introduce ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) initiative, highlighting innovation support and funding opportunities for space-enabled services”
Overview of the webinar cycle objectives, WOLL network vision, and the importance of digital/space innovation in addressing water challenges.
Presentation of the Water Europe approach concerning Digital Water Management, involving water stakeholders and WoLLs
- Roberto Di Bernardo, DSS Water Europe Expert Group.
The development of digital twins for urban water systems requires the effective integration of heterogeneous data sources, advanced modelling techniques, and decision-support methodologies to assist operators under normal and abnormal operating conditions. This presentation presents our experience in designing and deploying digital twins for urban drinking water and wastewater systems in two Cypriot cities, highlighting key design choices, implementation challenges, and the new operational and strategic opportunities enabled by their adoption.
- Demetris Eliades, DSS Water Europe Expert Group
MOSAIC is a decision intelligence platform co-created by Nanolyse Technologies, Terra Motus Ltd and Amelia Space Technologies. It helps organisations make better decisions when conditions change, and evidence is fragmented. MOSAIC combines EO-derived indicators with field and operational measurements, using hybrid modelling (domain-driven plus AI) to generate decision-ready outputs with clear uncertainty and traceability. We will demonstrate an initial soil–water use case and show how the same architecture generalises to other sectors where decisions depend on dynamic conditions and mixed evidence, including mining, chemical and environmental monitoring.
- Ivana Barasin, CEO Terra Motus
Overview of the Business Applications and Space Solutions programme, highlighting business applications (BASS) of space tech in water and related funding/opportunity schemes.
- Beatrice Barresi, ESA
