What is the main focus of your Expert Group?

The main focus of the Expert Group on Skills and Human Resources is to advance Water Europe’s vision of a Water-Smart Society by fostering a human-centric approach to innovation, collaboration, and capacity building. The group addresses workforce challenges such as aging demographics, skill shortages, and digital transformation. It aims to enhance professional development, promote diversity and inclusion, and support lifelong learning through strategic partnerships, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global knowledge exchange, ensuring a resilient and future-ready water sector.

What are the opportunities and challenges in your field that the Expert group is addressing?

The Expert Group on Skills and Human Resources is tackling several pressing challenges in the water sector, including an aging workforce, limited diversity, and a lack of coordinated training infrastructure across Europe. The sector also faces increasing demands for digital proficiency and adaptability in response to climate change and evolving regulatory frameworks. These challenges are compounded by fragmented learning pathways and insufficient mechanisms for lifelong learning. At the same time, the group identifies significant opportunities to strengthen the sector. These include leveraging technological advancements such as AI and IoT, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing capacity building through targeted training and certification programs. Public-private partnerships and global cooperation offer additional avenues to scale innovation and share best practices. By connecting existing initiatives and promoting inclusive, practice-based learning, the group aims to build a more agile and future-ready workforce capable of navigating the complexities of modern water management.

How does your Expert Group plan to achieve its goals, and how will it contribute to Water Europe’s Vision of a Water-Smart Society?

The Expert Group on Skills and Human Resources will achieve its goals through a structured and collaborative approach that includes regular meetings, stakeholder engagement, and strategic deliverables. The group will convene every six weeks to coordinate activities, track progress, and ensure alignment with Water Europe’s broader objectives. It will produce annual white papers, host internal and public events such as workshops and webinars, and contribute quarterly updates to Water Europe’s communication channels.
To foster collaboration and knowledge exchange, the group will map existing initiatives, identify gaps, and connect with other Water Europe Expert Groups, EU projects, and professional networks. It will also support the development of a dedicated marketplace within a so-called ‘Water Europe Academy’ to showcase innovations and training opportunities. Through these efforts, the group addresses core objectives of Water Europe’s Vision, particularly “Society” and “Economy,” by promoting inclusive capacity building, supporting workforce transformation, and enhancing the sector’s adaptability and resilience. By integrating stakeholder feedback, leveraging digital tools, and facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation, the group ensures that its actions are both impactful and aligned with the evolving needs of the water sector.
