Expert Group on Water Distributions Network

Share

What is the main focus of your Expert Group?

Water distribution networks are the key infrastructure for a sustainable future in water management in Europe. Through research, policymaking and appropriate regulation, capacity building, necessary investment, community engagement, and the adoption of smart technologies, this group of experts aims to help facilitate the necessary transformation toward resilient and efficient water distribution systems. Their collaborative efforts and innovative strategies ensure the sustainable management of Europe’s water resources, for the benefit of present and future generations.

What are the opportunities and challenges in your field that the Expert group is addressing?

The Expert Group addresses significant challenges related to the ageing and underfunded water distribution infrastructure across Europe, where modernization is urgently needed to ensure efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Key issues include the lack of investment in infrastructure renewal, the need for improved water quality through advanced pipe materials that prevent biofilm formation, and the necessity of continuous monitoring. The group focuses on deploying IoT sensors for real-time pressure and quality monitoring, as well as developing AI algorithms for accurate leak detection and localization. By tackling these technical and structural barriers, the group aims to foster smarter, more resilient water networks aligned with Water Europe’s goals.

How does your Expert Group plan to achieve its goals, and how will it contribute to Water Europe’s Vision of a Water-Smart Society?

The Expert Group aims to advance Water Europe’s Vision of a Water-Smart Society through targeted actions in research, policy, training, and public engagement. By developing smart sensors and IoT solutions for monitoring water quality, leak detection, and flow optimisation, the group contributes to cutting-edge innovation in water distribution networks, with findings documented through regular technology surveillance reports. It also supports the creation of robust policies and standards by collaborating with regulatory bodies to promote best practices and infrastructure resilience. Capacity-building efforts include workshops and training programs designed to equip professionals with essential skills for managing water systems. In parallel, the group leads community outreach initiatives to raise awareness on water conservation and encourage responsible, sustainable use of resources.
