Water Europe Executive Director Durk Krol recently moderated a high-level private expert roundtable at the European Parliament to evaluate the future of the European Union Bathing Water Directive. The session brought together a diverse group of representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, Member States, academia, and civil society to discuss the evolution of environmental policy and the integration of scientific advancements into public health monitoring.
The European Bathing Water Directive is widely regarded as one of the most successful chapters of European environmental policy. Recent data indicates that more than 85 percent of designated bathing waters across the continent are now classified as having excellent quality. However, the roundtable participants emphasized that continued success requires a critical re-evaluation of current monitoring frameworks to ensure they remain the most effective methods for safeguarding public safety.
Central to the discussion was the necessity of aligning environmental legislation with the latest scientific progress. Experts explored a variety of technical updates, ranging from the modernization of analytical methods in accordance with current ISO standards to a broader assessment of microbiological safety indicators. A significant point of reflection was whether the current reliance on two specific microbiological indicator organisms remains the most appropriate basis for assessing bathing water safety in the context of a rapidly changing global environment.
The exchange highlighted that maintaining public confidence in Europe’s natural water resources depends on a legislative framework that is both robust and adaptable. Participants agreed that as scientific understanding of waterborne risks evolves, so too must the regulatory tools used to monitor and report on water quality.
