Internship experience at Water Europe
Drafted by Emily Kemp, September 2022.
Starting in March 2022, I undertook a six-month Erasmus internship at Water Europe in Brussels; a member-based multistakeholder platform working to achieve a Water-Smart Society. Supporting principally the daily activities of the Collaborations Department, I was engaged in the delivery of European projects, such as Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
Specific activities included the planning and delivery of events and review of research papers and publications. I was also given the opportunity to contribute to the development of Water Oriented Living Labs, a series of public-private-people partnerships that bring together research and innovation processes in real-life communities and settings.
I think myself rather fortunate to have been given this opportunity to ‘work with water’. My time in Brussels was enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring. The Water Europe team made me feel welcome and needed from day one. They also ensured that the tasks I was given were meaningful and optimised the specific skills I brought to the job; academic knowledge of hydrology and water engineering, knowledge of Eastern European realities and native level English language.
I always felt supported by all members of the Water Europe team including Durk Krol, Managing Director and Andrea Rubini, my amazing mentor. At all times before, during and after the internship, I was also benefitting from professional and kind support of Joanna Kalka, Erasmus Coordinator at the Kazimierz Wielki University. Could hardly wish for more…
