Under the auspices of the Danish EU Presidency, the first day of Water Innovation Europe 2025 concluded last evening with the much-anticipated Water Europe Innovation Awards 2025 Ceremony.

Hosted in Copenhagen, this year’s Gala brought together over 280 participants from across Europe to celebrate excellence, creativity, and forward-looking innovation in the water sector. The ceremony shone a spotlight on five outstanding organisations and individuals whose pioneering work is driving the continent towards a Water-Smart Society — one that values water as a vital resource for resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness.

Introducing the WIE2025 Winners and Shortlisted Nominees

Digital Water Innovation Award

Winner: CDXi Solutions
Shortlisted: PYDRO & Spectromarine

CDXi Solutions was recognised for CDXi Water, a decision support system that safeguards water as a fundamental human right by ensuring availability, accessibility, and quality. The solution advances the concept of Digital Water through the continuous monitoring and analysis of inland water bodies and strengthens climate resilience by enabling predictive responses to risks such as algal blooms.

Global Water Challenges Award

Winner: EURECAT
Shortlisted: Act4Water & Águas do Norte

EURECAT earned the award for CASSANDRA, an initiative that contributes to the Water Europe Vision 2030 by promoting the human right to water through community-led approaches. It fosters inclusive, multi-actor structures that embody European principles of cooperation and resilience, positioning water as a social, environmental, and economic asset in a Water-Smart Society.

Technology & Services Providers, and SMEs Award

Winner: Zoi Environmental Technologies
Shortlisted: Chromafora & WAI

Zoi Environmental Technologies received recognition for BioGuy II – The World’s Most Efficient Bioremediation System for Wastewater. By optimising natural biogeochemical processes, the technology protects aquatic ecosystems, mitigates health risks, and reduces the burden of conventional management practices — redefining sustainability in water treatment and supporting safer, more resilient, and cost-effective resources.

Water Governance Award

Winner: World Economic Forum & Imperial College London
Shortlisted: Águas do Tejo Atlântico & SUEZ

The Water-BOOST toolkit developed by the World Economic Forum and Imperial College London enables key decision-makers to align policies, finance, and innovation with societal needs. By transforming complex governance environments into actionable strategies, it empowers European cities and stakeholders to implement water-smart solutions at scale — making water a driver of resilience, circularity, and inclusive growth.

Water Technology & Infrastructure Award

Winner: IDEXX
Shortlisted: MicroBubbles & Aguas de Valencia

IDEXX was awarded for Water Resource Tecta, an innovative and decentralised water quality monitoring system. Its automated, AOAC-certified technology provides faster results for contamination response, lowering costs and environmental impacts while democratising access to reliable water testing — even in remote communities.

 Water-Smart MEP Award

Winner: Thomas Bajada (Malta, S&D Group)

Elected in 2024, Thomas Bajada serves on the Fisheries (PECH) and Environment, Climate & Food Safety (ENVI) Committees in the European Parliament. He received the Water-Smart MEP Award for his leadership in championing water resilience, sustainable development, and a well-being economy, driving policies that strengthen Europe’s water security and social equity.

Since their launch in 2015, the Water Europe Innovation Awards have recognised individuals and organisations whose breakthrough solutions advance the vision of a Water-Smart Society. Applications are rigorously evaluated by expert juries from the Water Europe Working and Vision Leadership Teams, based on innovation, impact, scalability, and exploitation potential.

As Europe faces growing water stress and climate challenges, the 2025 winners exemplify how science, technology, and collaboration can turn ambition into tangible progress.
