Water Europe releases its new position paper on the EU Water Resilience Strategy: A Step towards a Water-Smart Society. Water Europe’s position paper outlines 10 key recommendations to overcome cross-sectoral barriers and leverage benefits to the whole society.
For the first time, the European Commission is prioritising water at the highest level, recognising its role in securing economic resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness. However, fragmented governance and underinvestment threaten progress. Advanced water-smart technologies could save €3 billion annually and create 13,000 jobs, but urgent investment, estimated at least at €255 billion, is needed to ensure compliance with the EU legislation and efficiency.
Water cannot be an adjustment factor in the programme of the new Commission, jeopardising competitiveness and environmental protection. A holistic Water Resilience Strategy (WRS) paired with a dedicated Water Fund is vital for Europe’s competitiveness, sustainability, and ecological future.
