In its regular package of infringement decisions, the European Commission pursues legal action against Member States for failing to comply with their obligations under EU law. These decisions, covering various sectors and EU policy areas, aim to ensure the proper application of EU law for the benefit of citizens and businesses.
-For the month of July, the Commission is calling the Netherlands, Slovenia, France, Austria, Greece for not respecting the law.
-Austria is giving authorisations for water uses that can last up to 90 years, even though the Water Framework Directive requires to sustainably monitor water bodies every 6 years in order to grant permits.
-The Netherlands are giving rights to pollute and abstract water with unlimited duration and no periodic review.
-Slovenia does not provide clear rules for diffuse discharges, concession or abstraction of water.
-Greece is not adequately collecting and treating urban wastewater.
-France failed to comply with the maximum nitrate concentration in drinking water set in the Drinking Water Directive in 107 water supply zones.
These countries have now two months to respond to this call and address the issues highlighted by the Commission.
