The new CIRSEAU project will contribute to a more circular European water ecosystem

Share

The CIRSEAU project started on 1st of September 2024 and celebrated its Kick Off Meeting in Brussels (Belgium) the 11th of December. CIRSEAU’s main goal is to build a collaborative ecosystem that generates strong synergies among the Circular Water Economy Community formed across EU projects.

This initiative of 5 European projects to increase water use efficiency and reuse expands the CIRSEAU cluster – formed by B-WaterSmart, REWAISE, ULTIMATE, WIDER UPTAKE and WATER-MINING – , which started with the CE-SC5-04-2019 call in 2020.
The CIRSEAU cluster projects contributed to the circularity of the European water ecosystem by identifying alternative water sources, reducing water consumption, increasing use efficiency, recovering valuable materials from water, producing carbon-free water cycles, and strengthening resilience to climate change.

This cluster agglomerated the results of 35 demonstration sites to promote synergies in the lines of investigation. In addition, the different working groups contributed by releasing joint policy briefs, sharing knowledge and participating together in communication and dissemination events and activities.

CIRSEAU is now funded by the European Research Executive Agency as a 36-month CSA (Coordinated and Support Action) to enhance market uptake, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

With targeted education, training and professional skills development, CIRSEAU will change perceptions and behaviour of water users and promote to embrace circular solutions. By proactive stakeholder consultation and co-creation, the project addresses relevant social barriers and develops the roadmap for efficient management of resources and energy in a sustainable water cycle. By integrating relevant bodies to develop End of Waste criteria (EoW) and needed standards, CIRSEAU will accelerate the transition to a circular water economy, in line with EU policies of Zero Pollution to become climate neutral by 2050.

The CIRSEAU project plans to join forces with the sister project BOOST-IN, which seeks to tackle challenges related to water resources, and other EU projects and initiatives to contribute to a more water-smart and circular Europe.

Coordinated by Aqualia, this consortium brings together 10 partners from 6 countries (Belgium: Water Europe, EurEau; Germany: IWW Forschung; Greece: NTUA Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion; The Netherlands: TU Delft, KWR; Norway: SINTEF; and Spain: Aqualia, Eurecat, PKF Attest innCome) to provide the multidisciplinary expertise and trans-nationality required to foster cross-promotion, communication alignment, and to allow impactful outreach to public authorities, policy makers, and standardization bodies.

The project, funded under the call HORIZON-CL6-2023-CircBio-01-3 – Harnessing the innovation potential and market uptake of successful circular economy water related projects, will last until August 2027 and has received a 2M€ budget to fulfil its goals.
