Share

Hans Goossens, Water Europe President, recently participated in a Financial Times webinar focused on “Developing Technology to Secure the Water Supply.” Organized in partnership with Schneider Electric and moderated by Sylvia Pfeifer, the event brought together experts to discuss technological advancements and sustainable strategies for securing global water systems.

In his address, Hans Goossens emphasized that “Water is life. Water is living. Water is well-being. Water is welfare.” He reiterated the need to recognize the multiple roles water plays in society and its inherent value, emphasizing that sustainable water management is key to addressing the impacts of climate change on the economy and meeting the EU’s growth ambitions.

Key insights from the panel discussion include:

  • The importance of water for societal well-being: Ensuring efficient water supply, treatment, and distribution is vital for public health and welfare. Without strong policies and efficient allocation, water scarcity could lead to a 10% global GDP decline by 2050.
  • AI as a game-changer for water management: While AI technologies have a carbon footprint, they provide crucial data for optimizing water use and addressing water crises on a granular level.
  • Reimagining wastewater: Within the framework of a circular economy, wastewater is no longer just a liability. It contains valuable resources – including energy, metals, and nutrients – that, if properly utilized, can contribute to sustainable growth.

For those who could not attend, the webinar is now available for viewing on-demand.
