At the recent WIN2026 – Water in Industry event, the conversation around industrial water management shifted from simple efficiency to a strategic necessity for Europe’s economic future. Geoff Townsend, Industry Fellow at Ecolab and Chair of Water Europe’s Water-Smart Industries Community of Practice, delivered a keynote address outlining why water resilience is now a cornerstone of industrial competitiveness.
As Europe navigates its dual green and digital transitions, increasing water stress is fundamentally reshaping industrial priorities. Townsend’s address explored the transition from a “efficiency-first” mindset to a comprehensive resilience-based approach, emphasizing that water can no longer be viewed merely as an operational resource, but must be treated as a strategic business asset.
Four Pillars for Long-Term Industrial Resilience
During the keynote, Townsend highlighted four critical requirements for delivering long-term water security across the continent:
– Data-Driven Decision Making: A fundamental need for better data and a clearer scientific understanding of sustainable water use.
– Cross-Sector Collaboration: Strengthening local partnerships between industries, municipalities, and agricultural sectors to manage shared water resources.
– Circular Water Strategies: Prioritizing water reuse and circularity to reduce reliance on increasingly scarce freshwater sources.
– Strategic Investment Models: Developing financial frameworks that recognize water as a high-value asset, encouraging proactive investment in resilient infrastructure.
Translating Ambition into Action
A central theme of the discussion was the EU Water Resilience Strategy. While the strategy provides a credible and necessary roadmap for the continent, Townsend emphasized that its ultimate success hinges on the ability of industry leaders to translate these high-level ambitions into concrete action.
“The roadmap is there, but the journey requires leadership, innovation, and a collaborative spirit across all industrial sectors,” noted the discussion participants.
As Europe pushes forward with its industrial transformation, managing water with a resilience-focused lens is becoming essential not only for environmental stewardship but for the long-term prosperity and autonomy of European industry.
