Water4All Partnership Brings “Lessons from the Ground” to European Parliament to Shape Future EU Water Policy

As Europe faces an era of unprecedented climate volatility, the Water4All Partnership took a central role in a high-level policy dialogue at the European Parliament last week. On February 5th, Andrea Rubini, representing the Water4All Partnership, joined industry leaders and policymakers to discuss the critical transition from research to implementation in the face of worsening droughts and floods.

The event, titled “Adapting to Climate Change: Making the EU more water resilient by learning from successes on the ground,” held in Room Spaak 7C50, comes at a defining moment for European environmental legislation. In 2026, the European Union is set to advance two pillar initiatives: the Water Resilience Strategy and the European Climate Adaptation Plan.

Participating in the flagship panel discussion, “From practice to policy: lessons from the ground,” Andrea Rubini emphasized that policy ambition alone is no longer enough.

The discussion highlighted that while the EU sets the overall direction, the most effective responses to water scarcity and ecosystem degradation are currently happening at local and regional levels. By bringing these “real-world success stories” directly into the European Parliament, the event aimed to ensure that EU-level policymaking benefits from tangible data and field-tested solutions.

Key takeaways from the session included:

  • The need for “Science-to-Policy” pipelines: Utilizing partnerships like Water4All to funnel research directly to decision-makers.
  • Scaling Circularity: Demonstrating how industrial water reuse—as seen in projects like RESURGENCE—is essential for maintaining European economic competitiveness while protecting biodiversity.
  • Urgency in Action: Prioritizing the rapid deployment of existing technologies to combat the immediate pressures on food systems and public health.

The event concluded with a project exhibition where MEPs and stakeholders explored the technical breakthroughs currently being piloted across the continent. This high-level exchange serves as a foundation for the upcoming legislative sessions that will define Europe’s water security for the coming decade.
