The Lesvos WOLL, located in Antissa, Western Lesvos, is a fully operational circular water management system developed under the HYDROUSA project. It focuses on decentralised wastewater treatment and water reuse in water-scarce island environments, strongly connected to local agricultural needs and rural resilience.

The Living Lab demonstrates nature-based, low-energy solutions, combining anaerobic treatment (UASB), constructed wetlands, and water reuse for irrigation. Operating continuously since 2020, it produces high-quality reclaimed water and supports local production and ecocsystem restoration.

Designed as a modular and open test environment, the WOLL enables the integration and testing of innovative technologies and pilot units under real operational conditions, supported by advanced monitoring systems (e.g. SCADA, sensors, laboratory analyses).

A diverse stakeholder network including (universities, authorities, end users) actively contributes to co-creation and implementation.

Future plans focus on scaling up solutions, strengthening digital monitoring (e.g. SCADA), and expanding replication across Mediterranean regions. Key challenges include seasonal variability, public acceptance, and regulatory alignment. The WOLL contributes to EU policies such as (EU) 2020/741 and the UWWTD recast, creating value through circular economy practices, stakeholder engagement, and climate-resilient water management.
