The impacts of climate change have become increasingly visible in Europe with extreme weather events such as droughts and heatwaves occurring with more regularity. For context, in April 2023, more than 25% of the continent had been in drought.
In Southern Europe, this has led a pronounced water scarcity challenge, with unsustainable water management practices and agricultural demands further contributing to issues in supply. In Spain, more than 17% of the territory is affected by long term draught with a third of the country declaring emergency or alert status for the same reason. Addressing this challenge is not only necessary to ensure the competitiveness of industry in this region, but also the well-being of communities.
During this workshop we will take stock of the industry’s effort to face this challenge and discuss policy options at EU and national level to support them.
