Joint call of MEPs and the EESC for an EU Blue Deal and Water-Smart Legislation

Share

On Tuesday 12th September, a group of Members of the European Union issued a letter, calling for an ambitious EU Blue Deal. This letter was written under the lead of Pernille Weiss, European Parliament and Pietro de Lotto, EESC.  This letter was sent to all the Head of States of the European Union’s member states and fits with the current activities of the EESC, as well as the regular activities of the MEP Water Group within the European Parliament.

In its work for a Blue Deal, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is developing several opinions from its different committees. Together the opinions should lead to proposals for a comprehensive approach to water policies. To achieve these goals, the EESC has highlighted the importance of developing resilient water infrastructure and distribution networks. This begins with conducting assessments of the current state of water infrastructure and availability in each Member State to identify investment needs and ensure efficient water management. On 26 October 2023, the EESC will present its Call for an EU Blue Deal to the EU institutions and stakeholders.

Particularly, the section for the Single Market, Production and Consumption (INT) support actions towards water-efficient consumption and consumer awareness of their water footprint in order to contribute to a Water-Smart Society. Measures focused on encouraging and guiding consumers towards water-efficient consumption:

– Clear communication regarding the value of water
– Promoting water-efficient appliances/devices~
– Informing consumers about their water footprint
